Questions

What is Calm Jam?

A library of calm instrumental tracks to play along with. Every track shows an estimated key and tempo, and the amp lets you slow a track down without changing its pitch and loop any section.

Is it free?

Yes. All the music is by Purrple Cat under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence (CC BY 4.0). Stream it, download the MP3s, and use it with credit.

Can I post a video of me playing along?

Yes. You can use the tracks in videos and livestreams on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Twitch and other social platforms with credit. Put “Music by Purrple Cat” and a link to the licence in the description.

How accurate are the keys and BPM?

They are software estimates. Most are right, some are a relative key away (for example A minor shown as C major) and some tracks change key. Treat them as a starting point and confirm by ear. Tracks where the software was unsure show no key.

Does slowing a track down change the pitch?

No. The speed control uses your browser’s pitch-preserving playback, so the track gets slower but stays in the same key. Very slow speeds can sound a bit watery.

Why does the A–B loop need a moment to start?

The first time you set a loop point, the player loads the whole track into memory so it can jump back exactly. It takes a second or two.

Can I use these as backing tracks for a recording?

Yes, with credit. The music is CC BY 4.0, so you can record over it and publish the result on social media, a website or a stream. Please don’t upload it, or a recording that contains it, to music streaming services such as Spotify or Apple Music, and no remixes, samples or covers of it there either.

Are there stems or sheet music?

No. These are finished stereo MP3s. There are no stems, chord charts or sheet music on this site.
